Help with gravity numbers - posted in Wine, Mead, & Cider (WM&C): I tried to use the spreadsheet (from the FAQ) to get the numbers I am looking for but it didn't seem to work. If anyone can help explain how to use that, or help me out otherwise, much appreciated.Base mead was 24 lbs of light amber honey, 7 gallons total volume, O.G. Was 1.124Used EC-1118 yeast cause I knew this was going to be. Mead, that drink of viking saga and medieval verse, is making a comeback. But this ain't your ancestors' honey wine. 'It's not just for the Renaissance fair anymore,' says Becky Starr, co-owner of Starrlight Mead, which recently opened in an old woven label mill in this little North Carolina town.

Crazy high SG
Hello all!! I’ve recently started making mead, I’m on my 4th batch, and it seems to me that my starting Gravity is SUPER high, so I wanted a check on it. The Recipe I used is as follows: 3 quarts organic pineapple juice, 9 pounds honey, store bought not raw, 1.5 gallons of water for a total volume of 3 gallons. When I pulled a gravity reading it read at 1.300, which is crazy high, even for a sweet mead. I went ahead and pitched my yeast, with a starter to count for the high gravity, and it seems to be doing well so far. Did I do something wrong, should I have used 4 gallons of total volume rather than 3? Thanks!!
